In 1934, The Fair at the PNE offered the first prize home, then called the PNE Dream Home. This fully furnished home was 800 square feet, and along with the city lot on Renfrew Street in Vancouver, and the furniture was worth $5000.
The first home was a great opportunity to showcase British Columbia’s wealth of homegrown materials and talent. For one lucky winner, it was the prize of a lifetime.
Leonard Frewin was the lucky winner of the PNE Dream home that first year, and he and his wife raised their family there for over 60 years.
After the fair, the home was relocated a half-block away by a team of Cydesdales. Imagine seeing a team of horses moving a home through the streets of Vancouver! What a sight that would have been.
Over the years, the homes have become larger and are relocated to dream locations further away; however, the idea of showcasing the latest in home building and interior innovation remains.
The 2016 PNE Prize Home is built by West Kelowna’s Freeport Industries and is an energy-star green home that boasts modern amenities. It will be located in Naramata, one of BC’s best wine regions.
